सांप्रत समय में रथयात्रा की सीखः

आज का दिन अषाढी बीज अर्थात् अषाढ शुक्ल का द्वितीय दिन है। इस पवित्र दिन रथयात्रा के नाम से ज़्यादा प्रचलित है क्योंकि आज कई जगह पर भगवान जगन्नाथ, उन के भाई बलराम और बहन सुभद्रा की मूर्तियों को तीन सुशोभित रथों में स्थापित कर के नगर की यात्रा के लिये निकाले जाते हैं और भाव विभोर हिंदु जनता जगह जगह पर रथयात्रा का अभिवादन करती हैं।

समस्त भारत में जगन्नाथपुरी, उड़ीसा की रथयात्रा अजोड है। वहाँ लाखों लोग रथयात्रा के दर्शन के लिये उमड़ पड़ते हैं। तीन रथों की ऊँचाई ४४ फ़ीट, लंबाई ३५ फ़ीट ओर चौड़ाई भी ३५ फ़ीट होती है- ये प्रति वर्ष ख़ास प्रकार की लकड़ी से नये बनाये जाते हैं और हर रथ का वजन २८० से ३०० टन ( २८०,००० से ३००,००० किलोग्राम) रहता है। आश्चर्य की वात यह है कि इतने भारी रथ कोई यांत्रिक शक्ति से नहीं चलते। हज़ारों भक्त उन्हें बड़ी भारी रस्सी खिंच कर चलाते हैं।

यह कैसे संभव है? इसका रहस्य एक ही है- यह हज़ारों लोग- जो एक दूजों को न तो पहचानते है, न तो जिन का सामर्थ्य या शक्ति समान है वो एक ही ध्येय से एक ही ह्रदय से रथों को एक ही दिशा में खींचे चलते हैं- यहाँ न कोई उच्च है न कोई नीच; न कोई निर्धन है न कोई धनवान। बस सब भक्त हैं और सब की एक ही अभिलाषा है कि रथों को गन्तव्य स्थल पर अपने सामूहिक बल से और सामूहिक प्रयास से पहुँचाये।

हम में से जो लोग भारत को आगे बढ़ता देखना चाहते है, भारत में सब का विकास हो, सब को सुविधाएँ प्राप्त हो, हमारी संस्कृति और धर्म की रक्षा हो और हमारी सीमाएँ सुरक्षित रहे ऐसा चाहते हैं, जिन्हें प्रधान मंत्री नरेन्द्रभाई मोदी पर भरोसा है उन्हें यह रथयात्रा से क्या सीखना है?

आज से ले कर जब तक २०२४ का राष्ट्रीय चुनाव संपन्न न हो तब तक हम एक ही लक्ष्य पर हमारा ध्यान केंद्रित करेंगे- भाजपा और एन. डी. ए. को २०१९ से भी अधिकतर बहुमत से जीताना और राष्ट्रद्रोही और लघुमति परस्त कॉंग्रेस कल्चर को क़ायम के लिये हिंद महासागर में डूबो देना यह हमारा लक्ष्य है। रथों को खींचनेवाले हम है- हमारी शक्ति, संकल्प, तन-मन-धन सामूहिक होंगे- न कोई उच्च न कोई नीच; न कोई निर्धन, न कोई धनवान, न कोई बुध्धिमान न कोई सामान्य। अगर संकल्प शक्ति से लोग ३०० टन का रथ खींच सकते हैं तो हमारे लिये क्या असंभव है?

Why I will vote for the Democratic Slate this Election by Gaurang G. Vaishnav (Part 2 of 4)

(4) Biden is pro-Islam: Everyone bends out of shape on this issue. We have very bitter experience of Islam than USA and therefore, anyone having anything to do with Muslims automatically becomes a suspect. That is natural but not right. I have been a volunteer of VHPA for 48 years and as you know have held positions where I have come in close contact of the thought leaders of VHP (Bharat), RSS and BJP. I do believe that more than being a religion, Islam is a political construct for imperialism and hegemony of a rigid and inhumane thought process.  I am strongly opposed to Islam and to the Muslims as a community (because of herd mentality) but not to an individual Muslim. An average person, a poor or lower middle-class person, a Hindu or Muslim has no time for religion. His worries are next meal or paying school fees for children.  To me Hindus who represent Congress, Samajwadi Party, Trinamool Congress, etc. are more dangerous than average Muslim.

I have objection to Biden talking about teaching Islam in schools (though his words have been distorted by pro-Trump Hindus) but for a different reason. He said that Islam is a confessional faith and therefore, it should also be taught  (like other confessional faiths- Christianity and Judaism.) He should have said, all religions should be taught but it is a fact that in USA, Hindus do not count. This is a Judaic-Christian country and will remain so. 

Trump has created so much hatred for Islam that it is natural for his political opponents to cash on it and attract the Muslims to his/her side. In the process, they have to, and will make statements to please them.

But there is a fundamental question that we can ignore only at our own peril. Should everyone have an equal opportunity in a society to aspire and advance irrespective of their caste, creed, religion or sexual orientation? If answer is No, then we will produce more Joe McCarthys and Trumps and create permanent fissures, resentment and violence. If the answer is Yes, then why should Muslims be not given a fair chance? There is no question that Rashida Tlaib and Ilhan Omar represent the true face of Islam but in a democracy, you cannot wish them away. You have to defeat them politically or censure them when they cross the line. The dance of democracy is very difficult- it is like dancing barefoot  on a floor full of glass shreds, but the alternatives are worse. 

Islam and terror spawned by its adherents is an age-old problem. Christians and Muslims have fought wars; Hindus and Muslims have fought wars; Jews and Muslims have fought wars. Yet, Islam has survived and expanded.  No single country or a leader, least of them Trump, can vanquish Islam. The reform has to come from within for a sustainable change. Any externally imposed changes will not last. USA and France tried hard and USA lost thousands of its men in Vietnam, but they failed to impose their way of thinking (capitalism) on Vietnam and when they were defeated, both Vietnams became one and became a Communist country. That is true of any society or religion. That does not mean that we ignore the elephant in the room. There should be vigilance and enough efforts to educate voters to defeat radical candidates but denying a section of society right to get involved politically is not a solution.

If Trump is truly anti-Islam, why does he do business with Saudi Arabia, the fountainhead of Islamic terror? Why did he not own reports form his own intelligence agencies that Jamal Khashoggi’s assassination was ordered by the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia himself and acted against Saudi Arabia? For Trump, everything is transactional. Then, he had said, Saudi Arabia is our big business partner. For Trump, money is the only thing that matters and therefore all his pronouncements against China hold a little value. If Chinese leaders offer him a good deal (especially, if it benefits his own businesses), he will change his anti-China rhetoric in no time.

Finally, on this issue my fellow Hindus have no faith in the designs of the Supreme. In darkest times, things have changed suddenly. Those who have lived during Indira Gandhi’s emergency rule of 19 months, will remember that  it seemed that we were doomed forever. No one thought that she would call for an election, but she did, lost it and the democracy was re-established. In her second stint, her son Sanjay Gandhi, essentially a street thug became all the more powerful and it seemed he would take Indira Gandhi’s place and become a ruthless dictator but then suddenly he died in a plane crash. When election fraud was rampant, a T. Sheshan came as the Chief Election Commissioner, used powers that no one before him had dared to use, and cleaned up electoral malfeasance. When people, especially Hindus were totally demoralized after BJP’s stinging ouster from power in 2004 and subsequent anti-Hindu policies of Congress government and its rampant corruption, a Narendra Modi came up to change the course of the history. You can look around the world and find several examples that changed the course of history whether it be the fall of Berlin Wall or end of Apartheid rule in South Africa. Destiny works in miraculous ways. We have to do our share but I do not believe in the dooms day scenario painted by many Hindu social media activists (you already know the difference between on-the-ground activists and social media variety) in which Hindus will be extinct tomorrow unless we throw all Muslims in the sea or bomb them out. One has to be active but not carry a chip on the shoulder.

(5) Socialism: Those who criticize the Democrats for their policies throw in words like socialist, communist and Leftist at will while each is a distinct ideology. But I will not get into a debate on that. Capitalism in its pure form means survival of the fittest, exploitation of resources including human beings, and each for his own self. Socialism, in theory wants the “Haves” to share their wealth with “Have nots.”  Both systems are imperfect. Late Pt. Deen Dayal Upadhyay proposed Integral Humanism, which is rooted in Hindu thinking of बहुजन हिताय, बहुजन सुखाय (for the wellbeing and happiness of maximum number of people) and अंत्योदय (upliftment of the last man.) This is also the policy of BJP in Bharat and creed of RSS; Almost all my friends are supporters of BJP and RSS in Bharat and of Vishwa Hindu Parishad of America (VHPA) and Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh (HSS) in USA.   Needless to say, Integral Humanism is closer to socialism than to capitalism. 

One argument is that social welfare schemes are misused. Able bodied people are on welfare, Medicaid is being taken advantage of, etc. This is true of any public program anywhere in the world. Those who make this argument have no answer for the doctors and other medical professionals (including NRIs) who fraudulently bill Medicaid and Medicare to the tune of millions of dollars. They keep quiet when mega banks and industry CEOS skim off billions of dollars of the general public through unethical means (e.g., Wells Fargo Bank, Bank of America, and there are many more). Who is more culpable- a person who cheats the system for may be $500 a month or these multi-million dollars scamsters? Checks and balances have to be built into the system and rules have to be enforced but shutting down safety net for millions of needy because of misuse by a small percentage is akin to throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

I hear people saying, “look I came here with only eight dollars and succeeded without any handout, why can’t others do the same?”  This is a heartless argument. Everyone is not endowed with same ability. There are people who just cannot cut it in a competitive environment. Some have physical deficiency, others mental. Then there are millions of senior citizens who have worked whole their lives and are yet struggling to stay afloat on paltry social security payments and some savings. Should we just pretend that they do not exist? Should we let them die a miserable death just because they were not as smart and lucky as you and I are? Where is the Hindu compassion? What is the point of donating and raising funds for programs such as Support A Child, Ekal Vidyalaya and Akshaya Patra? Let those people also fend for themselves; tell them, too bad,  it is survival of the fittest. Republicans disparage Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid as entitlements; they very well know that people pay into them all throughout their working life to have assurance of a steady stream of income and health benefits in their golden years when they need them the most. Successive governments have dipped in the till and left funds for Social Security and Medicare in precarious condition. Is asking those funds to be restored a call to socialism?

It is easy to pontificate others when you are financially secure and have come out ahead in the rat race. One has to put himself/herself in the shoes of the less fortunate people to understand their pain and anguish .It is patently wrong to assume that every person who gets benefit of government assistance is a cheat and a fraud. If my heart bleeds for the poor and disadvantaged in Bharat, it must bleed with the same intensity for the poor and disadvantaged  in my adopted country. Otherwise, I am nothing but a big hypocrite parading around as a Hindu social worker. . (To be continued to part 3 OF 4)

Dear Dr. Arun Shourie:

Namaste.  A few days back you came down hard on Modi government. You made an uncharitable remark that “The Modi government believes that managing economy means “managing the headlines” and that people have started recalling the days of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.” I didn’t like it but you are an expert on the subject and I am not, so I swallowed it. You further said, “The way to characterize policies of the government is – Congress plus a cow. That was a cheap pot shot and insulting to Hindu sensitivities. Yet, I let it ride thinking that even the best of the people lose balance sometimes in anger and say things that they later regret.

People have surmised that you are frustrated because you were not given a ministerial position in the new government, not even a place in the Niti Ayog. I didn’t agree with that assessment. I didn’t think you were that petty and hunkering after name and fame.

Having known your contribution to BJP and your scholarly and philosophical mind, having read your books, I have held you in high regards for decades, so I did not want to label you as another Modi hater just because of that one interview.

Then came another of your interviews with NDTV. It opened my eyes and changed my perception.  I want to pick only a few points from that interview and tell you that Mr. Shourie, you are wrong.

(1) “Prime Minister Narendra Modi is deliberately maintaining silence on incidents like Dadri lynching while his ministerial and party colleagues kept the issue alive merely to win Bihar elections.”. Maybe he is and that is a prudent way; if you had the good of the country at the heart and didn’t want Congress or its proxy to rear its head again, you would have kept quiet too. And why should he comment? Just because it was a Muslim death? Why did you not mention that he should make a statement also on the murder of Prashant Poojary, a Hindu by Muslims? So you are also falling in media trap of labeling Modiji as a PM of Hindus only.

(2) You cited a Pakistani analyst to say that “while the neighboring country was trying to get out of the pit, India was slowly going down its way.” So now, to you suddenly an analyst from Pakistan carries more weight? And is Pakistan really trying to come out of the pit? It doesn’t look like looking at what they are doing in Kashmir.

(3) You have said “the writers, authors and artists were conscience-keepers of the country and their motives cannot be questioned.”  Ha, ha, ha! So where was their conscience in 1984 Sikh genocide, in 1989 when Pundits in Kashmir were massacred, in 2002 when 58 Hindus were burnt alive at Godhra in a railway coach when Professor Joseph’s hands were cut by the Jehadis in Kerala? So these guys’ motives cannot be questioned but Modi’s can be?

(4) ” Praising scientists like P M Bhargava and Infosys founder N R Narayana Murthy, who have expressed concern over these incidents, you questioned how these people can be called rabid, a term used by Arun Jaitley.”  One only needs to do a Google search on Bhargava to see where his ideological loyalties lie.  Bhargava has been supporting AAP from the very beginning and has leftist, pro-Naxal leanings. He is not a neutral, ‘oh, so ever gentle soul.’ Mr. Murthy is a Ford Foundation Trustee. Do we need to know more?

(5) ” These people have contributed immensely to the country and those who attacked them have not read a book in the last 20 years. Those who cannot write two paragraphs are sitting in judgement over writers.”  This is so absurd an argument that it takes the cake. If we were sitting in judgement of their literary work, the argument would make sense; here we are judging their action of Award Vapasi and political motive behind it, which doesn’t require literary skills but common sense.

Your strident support of politically motivated writers and artists’ return of awards makes it crystal clear that in the last innings of your life, you have thrown away your wicket. You are so enamored with your righteousness that you have lost all sense of proportion. Up until now, I thought that Advaniji was the only icon whom I had held in high esteem and who had failed BJP and the nation at the crucial juncture. Now I know that he is in good (!) company.

I am one of 1.25 billion Bharatiyas. Though I happen to reside away from Bharat, my heart beats for Bharat. I blog, twit and use Facebook. I am not a scholar; I have not written incisive books; I have not been a minister; I have not been a darling of think tanks and conclaves; I am not a speaker; hey, I am not even a member of BJP. Yet, I dare say that Shourie Ji you have lost it. All your lifelong contributions have come to a naught because you have decided to become a tool in the hands of Adharma, i.e., in the hands of anti-Modi, anti-Hindu, and to an extent, anti-Bharat media. It is no different than Bhishma or Dronacharya deciding to side with the Kauravas.

Finally, I can write “more than two paragraphs” and I have read 50 or so book in last twenty years.

May you find peace within.

GIBC Directors with Dr. Swamy.

Atlanta, GA: Over 150 Atlantans attended the economic seminar hosted by the Global Indian Business Council (GIBC) on Monday, August 24, 2015 at Global Mall, Norcross, GA. A networking Dinner at the Ashiana Banquet Hall followed the seminar addressed by Dr. Subramanian Swamy, senior leader of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and well-known economist.

Dressed in his traditional kurta (loose shirt), Dr. Swamy enumerated the opportunities opened by the 18-month-old government under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Speaking with his usual wit and candor, Dr. Swamy used deep historical knowledge and current economic figures to elaborate his own vision of economic growth of India. He explained the importance and the need for ensuring a level playing field to balance an unfair advantage to MNCs due to cheap and easily accessible Capital in USA and relatively cheap labor and logistics in India. He observed the US multi-national companies could borrow capital at 3% in USA for investment in India and take advantage of cheap Indian labor. On the other hand,India’s own small retail traders face a staggering 12% interest rates within India rendering them incapable of competition with the MNCs from overseas. Yet when it comes to allowing the Indian construction companies to compete/borrow capital in the US market by bringing with them their own lower-paid workforce fromIndia, theUSimmigration offices balk at the thought of cheap labor entering from India.

He added, “The foreign direct investment lately has brought unique technologies and fostered innovation in India, primarily due to open heart welcome by the Indian government.” Swamy pointed out that 65% of the growth in the European Industrial Revolution as well as in the more recent American electronics and communications-based industrial revolutions came from innovation, versus less than 35% of India’s Soviet-style development until 1990. Swamy emphasized that India enjoys a huge Demographic Dividend presently with an average age of only 26 years compared to over 40 in Europe and Japan and 37 in the USA. The challenge for India thus is to educate this young population and inculcate risk-taking innovations and entrepreneurship in them. Using the Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) logic, a US dollar is an equivalent to Rs. 24, which hitherto puts, India among the top 5 economies in the world. With China possibly encountering problems similar to those faced by Japan for several decades in the past, India could even rise to become the #2 economy, second only to the United States projected Swamy. Both the US and Indian democracies share the open, transparent structures that are vital to innovation and advancement.

Dr. Swami argued for abolishing the income tax in India, which mostly burdens only the working middle classes and particularly the young professionals.. The annual loss in revenue to the exchequer from the income tax cuts could be easily made up by fairly auctioning communication spectrum and coal rights at market rates. He reiterated that additionally far more investment resources could be freed by bringing back illegally accumulated holdings in offshore accounts in some 70 nations if the Government of India showed the resolve without corruption.

Earlier, welcoming Dr. Swamy, GIBC President-elect Dhiru Shah, praised him for his relentless challenges against corruption in India and for his advocacy in support for economic reforms to liberate the Indian economy from its socialist dogmas and needless bureaucratic shackles. Shah also thanked Nagesh Singh, Consul General of India for his leadership and for making the Consulate General of India (CGI) Atlanta inclusively accessible in its outreach to the entire Indian American community in the Southeast USA.

Outlining the mission of GIBC, Shah stated that GIBC was launched in 2014 in Atlanta with a clear objective of facilitating global economic development with emphasis on India through business, trade and commerce. GIBC has already organized three successful economic seminars in Atlanta and one full day seminar in Ahmedabad in January 2015. To help the US and foreign companies to navigate the Indian rules and regulations, GIBC opened its first full-fledged office in Ahmedabad, India earlier in January 2015.  A second office in New Delhi is to be opened in the immediate future. Collaborations with business chambers in Australia have also been setup, while other similar ventures are in the works.

Introducing CG Nagesh Singh, GIBC VP Ashwin Patel remarked that CG has inspired and won hearts of the Atlanta community with initiatives within two months of his arrival. In his remarks, CG Nagesh Singh welcomed Dr. Swamy adding “Since the time I was in university, I have admired you for all the qualities mentioned by my predecessors but I admired you most was for is that you give it as good as you get.”

Another guest speaker, Sahil Jaggi, International Marketing manager of Atlanta-based United Parcel Service, spoke of the global shipping company’s large and fast-growing presence in India. He praised the initiatives that have made huge improvements in customs clearance and logistics in India, and was optimistic about strides in streamlining the processes and logistics.

GIBC’s Subash Razdan, with his characteristic humor, introduced Dr. Swamy as the charismatic and dashing American-trained professor who had inspired his generation at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) inDelhiduring his stint at IIT as the Head of the Humanities Department in the early 1970s.

During the Q&A session, CG Nagesh Singh pointed to the growing India-USA initiatives to boost education in India, including an exchange program with US-based experts. He pointed to Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Silicon Valley and his summit with President Obama as moves in the right direction to facilitate these endeavors. In response to the plight of the farmers, Dr. Swamy pointed to the need to empower Indian farmers with aggressive use of technology to open up global markets for them.

Global Indian for Bharat Vikas (GIBV) is very happy to congratulate Shri Narendra Modi on leading BJP and NDA a to unprecedented and historical victory in the recently concluded national elections of India.

This election has far reaching consequences for India and the world. After 30 long years, era of coalition politics has come to an end. A stable government where BJP has clear majority will be able to take critical decisions without succumbing to pressures from small regional parties with narrow interests. India has huge potential for development. It has rich natural resources and largest population of people under age 35. Shri Narendra Modi is capable of unleashing this potential and harnessing energy of the youth and employing it for all round progress.

Another salient point of this election is end of dynastic rule of Nehru-Gandhi family. Congress, led by this family forever has been reduced to a paltry 44 seats, failing the minimum threshold to qualify for leader of opposition in the Loksabha. Most of its ministers and seasoned members have lost spectacularly. Shri Modi had promised Congress Mukta Bharat and the process has begun. Congress has failed to win a single seat in seven states and has not been able to cross double digit in any state. Disintegration of Congress is now only a matter of time.

From BJP’s tally in UP and Bihar, it is clear that people have voted crossing barriers of caste and religion and in favor of development and stability. Decimation of BSP and SP in their bastion points to the beginning of the end of caste driven politics. As a matter of fact thousands of migrant workers and employees of major corporations in Gujarat who hail from UP, Bihar and Odisha and have experienced benefits of Gujarat model firsthand became brand ambassador for Shri Narendra Modi in their respective states.

Shri Narendra Modi deserves praise for conceiving, planning and executing a superb campaign using all the tools available, be it the social media or Chai Pe Charcha. He has led from the front and enthused millions of volunteers across the globe to work for a clear majority for BJP and a formidable tally for NDA. He has turned every obstacle, every insult thrown at him into a formidable weapon, be it Chaiwala or Jehar ki Kheti (poison farming) or Nichee jati (lower caste.)

Under Shri Narendra Modi’s leadership, we look forward to a time when India will lead the world, not as a superpower but as a cultural Guru, where age old and time tested ethos of Vasudhaiv Kutumbakam (The whole universe is a family) and Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah (May all be happy) will lead to an era of cooperation instead of conflict and nations would compete to provide better living conditions to their citizens instead of stockpiling weapons in a game of one-upmanship.

Congratulations are also in order to the voters of India. They voted in big numbers. They voted judiciously and decisively. They voted for better future. This exhibits maturity of Indian electorate.

History in the Making- on the Campaign Trail, from USA to India-11

Campaigning in villages near Varanasi: May 2, 6 to 9

We spent several days going door-to-door and also addressing groups of villagers in several villages in Varanasi Loksabha constituency. There were several teams covering different villages. Girishbhai Gandhi (Florida) and I were paired together and we would have a local volunteer from the area to be visited accompany us everyday. We had worked out with a car rental company so every morning a car would be available though the driver would be different. As decided from the beginning we did not solicit any funds from the party. Ours was an independent effort augmenting BJP’s campaign and was supported by our own funds.

Some of the villages that we visited were: Chakia Karadia, Munohua (Sikarganj), Sulvesa, Machhilshahr, Ayodhyapur, Loharapur, Bodalpur, Bakhariya, Kakarahiya, Korauti,, Kotawa, Sirasa, Rohaniya, Kabirpur, etc. Most places, response was very positive. I got the impression that people were so tired of misgovernance, lack of infrastructure and lack of opportunities that they wanted to give a chance to Narendra Modi whose agenda of development was music to their ears. Perhaps, first time, these folks were looking beyond caste labels. No matter which village we visited, their complaint was the same- that no elected leader came back to listen to their problems, that the village head was corrupt, that neither had they enough drinking water, nor had they water for farming, electricity was sporadic, no one cared how poor people lived, etc. We repeatedly explained to them need to unite as a community and elect better representatives. We also took notes so that we could present a brief report to Narendrabhai

In one village we came across a strong AAP supporter. This was a Kurmi Patel. Many of these Patels are supporting BJP. He had choice words for system failure and had reasons to support AAP, whom he thought had solutions to his problems. We had a lively discussion but we had to keep it to the level where he could understand what a vote to AAP would mean.

In our visit to Bakhariya, Kakarahiya, Korauti,, Kotawa, Sirasa, and Rohaniya villages, we were accompanied by two women teachers- Puja Singh and Meena Singh. They were M.A,, B.Eds and quite progressive though in their own home and village they had to be in ghunghat (veil.) We came to know more about the village life, plight of the girls, poor standard of education, etc. from them. They had voted for SP in the last election and were now ruing their decision. Now they were part of BJP’s Women’s wing.

We also had interaction with pro-BJP Muslims in the village of Kotawa. This village had seen an inter-Muslim disturbance the day before we visited it. It so happened that some Muslim office bearers of BJP from other states had come to campaign in this town. There was a deputy minister for minority affairs from Chhattisgarh, Salim Ansari. Then there was Ashfaq Patel, president of BJP Minority Cell, Nagpur. His wife, Jaitunbi Ansari is Deputy Mayor of Nagpur Municipality. While they were distributing the leaflets, they were attacked by local Muslims; reason given was that the leaflets were printed in the holy language, Urdu and when these leaflets were strewn around in the street, it was an insult to the Urdu. However, real reason was the fact that there were Muslims who were favoring BJP. Police had to intervene and next day there was a flag march to ward off any potential trouble. We met with the visiting delegation and pro-BJP supporters from the town. Fortunately, by this time a truce had been reached but media was there to interview people to provide fodder to their communal mill. It was an interesting experience to sit down with the Muslims and listen to them. It was also good to see that some educated Muslims have started to come out of the ghetto mentality.

At Kabirpur village the audience consisted of about 20 women; they were not farmers. They complained bitterly about not having water for their children. Village had only one hand pump which was installed near village head’s home. Though it was meant for use by all, village head’s family was giving hard time to the people who came to use it.

These villagers had to go a mile to a well to fetch water. These women were so agitated that there was a cacophony of voices, all of them speaking at the same time; on top of that Hindi in Varanasi area is a mix of Hindi and Bhojpuri and more so in villages, so half of what they were saying was going over our heads. We found it difficult to pacify them. One woman was asking for help with her young widowed daughter in law who seemed to be in her early twenties. I really felt depressed after this visit, which marked the end of our campaign in Varanasi.

All in all, this has been an awesome experience and I learned a lot. I had come face to face with poor and forgotten Bharat. Since Bharat consists of 70% villages, I can see that the challenges are enormous. I hope Modiji will get support form all quarters to better the lives of these people and give them hope for their future.

I must add that we had generous support from some great souls. Dr. Naresh C. Gupta, a successful businessman, whom we in VHP of America (VHPA) have known for decades through his involvement in Ekal Vidyalaya program, had taken upon himself to pay for our guesthouse stay. There were six rooms booked for an average of seven days with each one costing about Rs. 900 per day. He also invited us for dinner more than once. Dr. Bhupendra Kumar Modi, head of Modi conglomerate treated all NRis to a lavish dinner at a four star hotel. Separately, Mrs. Veena Modi invited us for a dinner at Taj hotel. We have known Modis from late 90’s when they were involved with VHPA’s Dharma Prasar Yaatra and United Nation’s Millennium Peace Summit in 2000. Mrs. Modi presented all NRIs with a box of Banaras’s famous sweets.Wherever we went, we were warmly received. Villagers always offered something to eat. They were overwhelmed that some one from as far as America had come to listen to them. In turn we felt deeply connected to them.

I hope for an improved future for these villagers, where they would have all the basic necessities of life such as roads, water, electricity, healthcare and education and enough opportunities to make a decent living. May this election be a game changer in that sense.

On the last day, we took time out to visit Kashi Vishwanath Mandir and take dip in Gangamaiya at Assi ghat. I will write about it some time in future.

We returned to Amdavad on 11th and as I wrote all these reports (now that I have easy access to the Internet and Wi Fi), I have relived the wonderful experience.

Happy New Year, 2014- Task Ahead

We wish all a very happy Gregorian New Year, 2014. Let this year see total wipe out of Congress party from the electoral map. Let thinking citizens of Bharat give clear majority to BJP, so that Shree Narendra Modi can be elected as an effective Prime Minister and can usher in good governance without constraints of coalition politics.

A decisive nationalist leader, who inspires others to give their 110% and who brooks no nonsense is the need of the hour; only Narendra Modi fits that bill today.

This is not the time to tinker with alternatives that are willing to give away Kashmir, hobnob with Maoist terrorists and have sympathy for terrorist killed in Batla encounter. Yes, perhaps, this new breed can give good governance, though it is highly doubtful looking to their \”freebies\” culture, but can we barter away national security for such freebies? That is the only question every voter has to ask herself.

Let us all rededicate ourselves today to spend every available moment to campaign for Narendra Modi and his party, BJP. Let NRIs call their contacts in Bharat, send email, write letters, use social media such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Quora, etc. to bring awareness in the society at this very critical juncture in the history of Bharat, that is, India.

Let us make sure that the maximum number of people register to vote and decide to vote for BJP, since that is the only way Narendra Modi can become the Prime Minister of India. . Let us concentrate on new voters, especially youth.

Defeats are normal in politics and there is absolutely no dishonour in losing a democratic election. Some defeats are tolerable, some are severe. Either way, it is how a party and its leaders respond to that defeat that defines their character. Mother Gandhi and Son Gandhi came out in the evening on December 8 and accepted defeat in all the 4 states (Chattisgarh, Delhi, MP and Rajasthan) and congratulated their “opponents” for their victories. This is a reflection of poor character and pathetic lack of spirit that is traditional with the Congress. The mother-son duo was so pathetic that they didn’t want to name “BJP” as the winners and congratulate them. Rahul Gandhi went further to state “we have to learn from AAP” on how to reach out to people or campaign. Bravo! While AAP has made an excellent debut in Delhi there isn’t anything that would suggest they have swept to power in the state. Like the Gandhis, all the Congress spokies who were on TV channels were simply too arrogant to accept defeat honourably. These morons don’t seem to realise that this is the same arrogance that cost them the elections in the first place. This is the same arrogance that showed up when RahulG turned up a presser to declare “complete nonsense” and directly ridicule his own party’s PM.

Will they learn? I doubt it! These Congis aren’t very bright people at learning. That brings us to the media who too were extremely unwilling to accept the BJP sweep. Well alright, if these doormats at NDTV, CNN-IBN,TimesNow, IBN7 etc. don’t want to accept a 4-0 for BJP then they can at least concede it’s a 0-4 loss for the Congress. Doesn’t matter who they lost to, does it? All they were interested in was to toast the AAP as the biggest victor of the elections.

AAP made a great debut in Delhi but there are clear reasons for it. Any joker knew Sheila Dikshit was going to face the flak for Congress failures. There was anti-incumbency, there was that Nirbhaya rape and crimes in the city, there was corruption. So the SheilaD govt was a sitting duck. But as they say in cricket, even if it’s a loose ball someone has to hit it for a boundary. This is what AAP did well. The BJP didn’t finish the task in Delhi because for all the heavenly reasons, most of the top BJP leaders in Delhi have their eyes on the PM’s chair and not on Delhi. Be it Advani or Swaraj or Jaitley, the BJP heavyweights were hardly bothered about Delhi. Late in the game they came up with Dr. Harshvardhan as their CM candidate. The other thing is the modest, soft-spoken Dr.H is not exactly a charismatic, inspirational leader who can jump into a ring full of gladiators. If at all BJP salvaged Delhi to become the single largest party in these elections it surely was because of the hectic rallies byNarendra Modi in the last week before elections. If not, AAP would have been sitting pretty with a clear majority. Even an ordinary person like me could predict that in a tweet. But the MSM would like to tell you “No Modi effect”. That’s their LIE!

So whose votes did AAP take away? The answer is an unambiguous: BJP! They took the BJP votes because whatever anti-Congress votes were available should have gone to BJP. But this had to be shared with AAP. Yes, it’s possible that AAP also got some of the traditional Congress votes but the bigger loss is clearly BJP’s “anti-Congress” votes in this particular election. That the BJP still survived this dent and emerged the largest party is clearly due to Modi and nobody else. The MSM deceives in not acknowledging this. That naturally brings us to the question: Why is the MSM so upset with the victories of BJP? Let us acknowledge that the BJP may form a minority govt in Delhi which will be constantly under threat of being pulled down. Technically, the AAP can also form a govt with outside support from Congress who would like to keep the BJP out or there may be another election soon. Pulling down a minority govt is pretty much a given because the Congress has a historical tradition of pulling down govts. So why is the media making out as if this election was all about AAP?

If you observe the results, the BJP retained Chattisgarh with almost the same number of seats, even though it looked tight. BJP retained MP with a bigger count (per last reports). In Rajasthan it would not be wrong to say the BJP simply massacred the Congress. The thrashing was so severe in Rajasthan that even anti-incumbency cannot explain it. All the above are scenarios aren’t some mystery that the Congress media cronies couldn’t see earlier. They did see the writing on the wall quite clearly but in their anti-Hindu and so called pro-secular frame, the BJP simply had to be defeated. Therefore, for much of the media the AAP became a darling, especially Rajdeep Sardesai, Sagarika Ghose, Ashutosh, Bhupendra Chaube and some from NDTV. On Election Day, December 4, the preference for AAP in Delhi became even more pronounced and I couldn’t help saying that the MSM was actually campaigning and goading people to go for AAP in the face of inevitable Congress defeat. This question by me in a tweet got a predictable answer (Of course, Chaubeji has since deleted the tweet):

That brings us to the other important issue. All the TV channels were eager and the panellists more than willing to dismiss there was any Modi-effect or Modi-wave in these elections. They were behaving like they were sourpuss Congress leaders. Even Arvind Kejriwal was far more gracious in his party’s performance than these cronies were in the severe Congress losses. Panellist Sunil Alagh told Sagarika Ghose “more than Congress it is you who is more Modi-centric”. The petty and pathetic Aarti Jerath on TimesNow wanted to desperately differentiate between a Modi-effect and Modi-wave, inspired, of course, by an article in her own paper by Swaminathan Aiyar. Well, what would constitute a Modi-wave? That all the seats in all 4 states would go to BJP? Or that 70% of seats would go to BJP? Those days in Indian elections are over when one party (Congress) used to get those kinds of majorities.

Whatever one may call it, it remains an immutable fact that Modi now does bear immense impact on elections. Would BJP have won all 4 states without Modi’s rallies? I doubt it. In MP and Rajasthan they may have won but Modi’s impact made the margin bigger and victory a certainty. In Chattisgarh it helped pulled the BJP nuts out of the fire. In Delhi it saved BJP a severe embarrassment. That is what Modi has achieved for BJP. And Arnab Goswami was shamelessly feeding questions to Jyoti Scindia “Is this a 4-0 victory for BJP or a 4-0 loss for Congress”? Well moron, there is only one loser in all 4 states and that is Congress. Even AAP can be considered a winner for that matter, even if they didn’t win a clear majority. At least two media people had the grace to partly admit the fact about Modi’s impact and effect.

Arnab was so pathetic he was already screaming for Congress to bring out Priyanka Vadra from the closet (Oh she becomes “Gandhi” during campaigns though). I have already said in my previous post that this is the end of the road for Rahul Gandhi. He is a disaster and as usual a scumbag sycophant like Manishankar Aiyar said (on NDTV) RG is only responsible for Youth Congress and has nothing to do with these election outcomes. I would go a step further: RG is responsible for NOTHING! Bihar, UP, Gujarat, MP, Rajasthan, Chattisgarh and Delhi lost by Congress but the moron RahulG had nothing to do with any of that. Sure, when Congress won Karnataka it was all Rahul magic. This is why I say for India to progress Congress must die. A party with no inner democracy and a culture of sycophancy and slavery cannot wish you freedom or democracy ever. That much is predictable of the Congress and some in the media. But to me there were some people in the media who were a bigger disgrace than the Congress. And the losers are:

No matter what the results of an election and what their political preferences, media anchors and panellists are expected to carry out discussions with some semblance of reason and logic. All the nine persons above (and there were some more minor ones) were an absolute disgrace in their unwillingness to even grudgingly concede a victory to BJP and the impact of Modi. Their hatred of Modi has now become part of their DNA and disease and there is no cure. It is killing them inside and they know it. All these years these people sucked up to Rahul Gandhi as India’s Obama or the Great White Hope. He sunk them! The Congress doesn’t have an answer to Modi so far nor do these media slaves. Shankarsan Thakur said on TimeNow Congis are afraid to blame the Gandhis. Laughable! I keep saying the media boys and girls piss in their pants and skirts when they have to mention “Gandhi”, so are they now expecting Congis to blame or name Gandhis? The cowards and slaves in the Congress are no different from the cowards and slaves in the MSM. Should we talk of 2014? It’s too early, will drink that poison when the time comes.

Arnab Goswami, acting like the regular circus clown, had a stupid question at his 6pm show on December 8: “Is AAP now a threat to Modi”? Well moron, get used to it! All of you are a threat to Modi including Congress, SP, JDU, RJD, RLD, DMK, CPM, AAP, Third Front, Fourth Umpire, CBI, Salma and Sabrina, IM, LeT, JuD and the Indian MSM collectively. He’s still standing. You’re the ones who have fallen to the pits. You’re the real losers.

A story of destructive governance and citizens who did not speak out

First, the UPA came for the roads sector. They destroyed contracting. They slowed down road construction. They left highways half built. We did not speak out. After all, the only reason the NDA could have started the golden quadrilateral is because they wanted to spread Hindutva.

Next, they came for the airline sector. They let Air India suck more money from taxpayers. They let bad regulation destroy the private sector. They let crony banking sustain bad bets. They ensured India would never be an aviation hub. We did not speak out. After all, flying is what birds do, not humans. Besides, aviation is bad for climate change.

Then they came for the power sector. They confused creation of mega capacities with actual generation. They had no rational pricing plans. They were arbitrary in the awarding of licences. They could not make up their mind whether they wanted to protect the environment or destroy it. We did not speak out. After all, the only power that matters is political. Electricity be damned.

Then they came for education. They promulgated the RTE after 100 per cent enrolment. They expanded capacity, but cut-offs still rose. They regulated in such a way that there was a glut in some subjects and a shortage in others. They confused university buildings with building universities. We did not speak out. After all our, our low quality education left us incapable of speaking out.

Then they came for industry. They turned the clock back in every way and waged open war. Ensure that regulations become more complex and uncertain. Ensure that input costs rise. Ensure crummy infrastructure. Promulgate a land scam policy known as SEZ and sell it as industrial policy. They encouraged FDI. But they forgot which one they wanted: outbound or inbound. But we did not speak out. After all, India is a rural country.

Then they came for employment. There was some growth. But they decided that the only good employment is that which has the hand of the state. So the NREGA’s expansion was seen as a sign of success, not failure. By its own logic, if more people need the NREGA, the economy has failed. But we did not speak out. After all, the more people we have dependent on government, the more we think it is a good government.

Then they came for agriculture. First, they create artificial shortages through irrigation scams. Then they have a myopic policy for technology adoption. Then they decide India shall remain largely a wheat and rice economy; we will have shortages for everything else. Then they price everything to produce perverse incentives. But we did not speak out. After all, why worry about food production when the government is giving you a legal right? Is there anything more reassuring than social policy designed by and for lawyers?

Then they came for institutions. They always had. This has been Congress DNA for four decades. They drew up a list of institutions that remained unscathed: Parliament, the IB, bureaucracy and you name it. They then went after those. They used institutions as instruments of their political design. They demoralised every single branch of government. But we did not speak out. After all, this was reform by stealth. Destroy government from within.

Then they came for inflation. They confused a GDP target of 10 per cent with an inflation target. Inflation will come down next quarter, we were told. Then they tried to buy us out. Inflation: no problem. Simply get the government to spend even more. Then they pretended inflation is a problem for the rich. Then they simply stopped talking about it. We did not speak out. After all, for some, inflation is just a number

Then they came for the telecom sector. They got greedy and milked it. They got arbitrary and retrospectively taxed it. But we did not speak out. After all, new communication can be a threat to government. Besides, we can always revert to fixed lines. More digging is good.

Then they came for financial stability. They produced a large deficit. They brought the current account deficit close to an unsustainable point. They nearly wrecked the banking sector. They created every macro-economic instability you can imagine, which makes investment difficult. But we did not speak out. After all, what would you rather have: macro economic stability or a free lunch?

Then they came for regulation. It was back to the 1970s. More arbitrary regulation is good. More rules are good. Uncertainty makes business more adept. The answer to every administrative problem is enacting a new law. Multiple regulators are good because they represent the diversity of India. We did not speak out. After all, just like the religious confuse piety with mere ritual, the virtuous confuse regulation with outcomes.

Then they came after freedom. They promulgated more restrictive rules for everything: freedom of expression, right to assembly and protest, foreign scholars. They used sedition laws. They kept the architecture of colonial laws intact. They said they stood against communal forces. But then they let Digvijaya Singh keep the communal pot boiling. They matched BJP’s communal politicisation of terrorism at every step and then some. We did not speak out. After all, if they are not Hindutva forces, they cannot be a threat to peace and liberty.

Then they came for virtue itself. They preached, from the very summit of power: avoid responsibility. It will always be someone else’s fault. They legitimised being corrupt: you are entitled to it if you are the party of the poor. They encouraged subterfuge to the point that members of the cabinet were subverting each other. They pretended that integrity is a word that does not mean anything. To independent thinkers, they said: why think when there is 10 Janpath? We did not speak out. After all, virtue and thinking can both be outsourced.

Then they came for the poor. They visited their houses and slept in their homes. They liked the experience so much they decided to become growth sceptics. Enact policies that keep India in poverty a little longer. But we did not speak out. After all, once the poor have been used as an argument, all else is immobilised.

Then they came for the citizens. They used the secularism blackmail to reduce our choices. If you are not with us you are evil they said. Then they infantilised us. You are not capable of exercising choices so we will make them for you. They acted as if we were so stupid that the three topmost leaders felt no need to justify themselves to us. But we did not speak out. After all we do have the vote.

Then they came for states. They looked at all states in the country and found out that they have pockets where they got their maximum vote share. They liked retaining them so much that they decided to break them down just on the eve of elections to maximize their gain and minimize the gain of opposition. But we are not speaking out. After all, what was India but a loose amalgamation of over 600 princely states unified into one.

Then they came for national security. They looked at all borders and neighbors of the country and told themselves that non-alignment is just another name for inaction and chose to take no decisions at all. But we did not speak out. After all, who cares about national security when personal future is not secure without any dependence on government.

Then they came for those who decided to speak out. Lathis & water cannons were used on students who protested the brutal rape of a young girl. People who requested a LokPal Bill were hounded into silence. One corrupt minister replaced another in the cabinet – with utmost disregard for people’s faith in democracy. They mistook our patience as powerlessness. After all, they know a lot of us have a very short-term memory & they will prevail come 2014.
